It is with heavy hearts that the family of Antony Charles Spires (Tony) announce his sudden passing on January 24, 2026 in Sudbury, Ontario at Health Sciences North. Son of the late Henry (Jim) Spires and the late Joan Spires (nee Mitchell), and brother to Andrew Spires (Christine) of Hampshire, England.
Tony will be missed by his friends and family, Dawn Spires, and his daughter, Erin Spires and son. Tony will also be missed by his nephew Alec (Bryony) Spires, and niece Lorna Spires (Chris), in England.
Tony studied agriculture chemistry at Wye College, Kent, UK. Tony came over to Canada in January 1973 to complete his M.Sc. studying the biochemistry of the Nickel Rim mine tailings in Sudbury, Ontario.
Tony’s career then took him to the University of Guelph working for the International Joint Commission, Phosphorus in the Great Lakes Study, before returning to Sudbury and starting his career with the Ministry of Environment.
His love for all things sport included playing rugby for the Sudbury Exiles, tennis, golf, soccer, cross-country skiing, hiking, and even ice hockey. Tony was an avid traveller and hiker having completed the Pennine Way. Tony will be missed for his dry wit and sense of humour as well as his intelligence for handling difficult situations under pressure.
The family would like to thank the staff of Countryside Extendicare and Health Sciences North for their compassion and care of Tony.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a future date. In memory of Tony and in lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Sudbury March of Dimes, the Ontario Brain Injury Association, or a charity of your choice.
