It is with great sadness that we announce that Gerald Michel, 91, passed away peacefully on February 20, 2026 surrounded by four generations of family. Beloved son of the late Ludger and The late Amanda Michel (née Bouchard), Gerald is survived by the love of his life, Jeannine (née Cloutier), whom he shared over 67 years of marriage. Father of Fern (Stephanie), Denis (Laurie), and Nicole (Mark), Gerald is loved by his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren that the cherished his entire life. Loving grandfather of Natalie (Luc), Nicholas, Jacob, Grant (Becky), Michael (Valerie), Chantal (Brandon), Alain, and great-grandfather of Seth, Mia, Elliana, Rowan, and Roman, Gerald will be missed by many. He is predeceased by his brothers and sisters Gloria Richard (Paul), Thérèse Lackmanec (John), Flore Cranston (Arnie), Arnel Michel and Victor Michel (Penny). He is survived by his brother Marcel (late Pauline) by his sister Georgette (late Reginald) and his sister-in-law Laurette.

Gerald was a hardworking man who dedicated his life to his family and community. A graduate of the University of Ottawa Faculty of Law, Gerald began practicing law at Hawkins, Gratton and Chmara before joining the Crown Attorney’s Office of Sudbury and Parry Sound in 1966. At the young age of 33, he was appointed a Provincial Court Judge in 1968, and lived to serve the people for 42 years. He served in North Bay, and later Sudbury, as Senior Judge for the Northeast Region.

As Regional Senior Judge, Gerald oversaw a vast territory covering much of Northern Ontario, and managed 17 to 18 judges across remote communities and First Nations. He was deeply involved with the Association of Ontario Judges education program, the development of the Justice of the Peace training and education program, and the establishment of bilingual court proceedings in 1976, which made French-language trials available in Ontario’s provincial courts. He was especially humbled by his time working with Indigenous communities, including his role in establishing restorative justice programs in Northern Ontario and the inclusion of Elders in sentencing decisions. Following his retirement in 2010, Gerald served as Chancellor for the University of Sudbury from 2012 to 2021, and received the first-ever title of Chancellor Emeritus from the University’s Board of Governors in recognition of his service. Gerald occasionally lectured on law at the University of Sudbury, and holds an honorary doctorate from Laurentian University. He was a life-long, proud, and devoted member of Le Club Richelieu in Sudbury.

The biggest joy in Gerald’s life was spending time with his beloved grandchildren and great- grandchildren. He would be seen at every sports game, school event, career milestone, and golf course, cheering along his family who made him proud until his very last breath. He left this world with a smile on his face, and with peace in his heart. He will be forever missed by his family, his friends, and by everyone who had the pleasure of meeting him during his 91 years.  Gerald’s family will receive relatives and friends at Paroisse Sainte-Anne-des-Pins, located at 14 Beech Street, Sudbury, on Saturday, February 28, 2026 at 10:00 a.m., followed by a funeral mass at 11:00 a.m with reception to follow.

In lieu of flowers, donations made to the Blue Door Soup Kitchen or the Northeast Cancer Centre would be greatly appreciated.

Lui survivent également son frère Marcel (feu Pauline), sa sœur Georgette (feu Reginald) et sa belle-sœur Laurette.

Gerald était un homme travaillant qui a consacré sa vie à sa famille et à sa communauté. Diplômé de l’Université d’Ottawa, Faculté de droit, Gerald a commencé à exercer le droit à Hawkins, Gratton and Chmara avant de rejoindre le bureau du procureur de la Couronne à Sudbury et Parry Sound en 1966. À seulement 33 ans, il fut nommé juge de la Cour provinciale en 1968 et consacra sa vie au service de la population pendant 42 ans. Il exerça ses fonctions à North Bay, puis à Sudbury, en tant que juge principal de la région du Nord-Est. En tant que juge principal régional, Gerald supervisait un vaste territoire couvrant une grande partie du Nord de l’Ontario et gérait de 17 à 18 juges dans des communautés éloignées et des Premières Nations. Il s’est fortement impliqué dans le programme de formation de l’Association des juges de L’Ontario, dans l’élaboration du programme de formation des juges de paix et dans l’instauration de procédures judiciaires bilingues en 1976, permettant ainsi la tenue de procès en français devant les tribunaux provinciaux de l’Ontario. Il a été particulièrement touché par son travail auprès des communautés autochtones, notamment par son rôle dans la mise en place de programmes de justice réparatrice dans le Nord de l’Ontario et par l’inclusion des aînés dans les décisions relatives à la détermination des peines. Après sa retraite en 2010, Gerald a été chancelier de l’Université de Sudbury de 2012 à 2021 et a reçu le tout premier titre de chancelier émérite du Conseil des gouverneurs de l’Université en reconnaissance de ses services. Gerald a donné occasionnellement des conférences sur le droit à l’Université de Sudbury et est titulaire d’un doctorat honorifique de l’Université Laurentienne. Il a été un membre de longue date, fier et dévoué du Club Richelieu à Sudbury.

La plus grande joie de Gerald était de passer du temps avec ses petits-enfants et arrière-petits-enfants adorés. On le voyait à chaque joute, événement scolaire, étape importante de sa carrière et sur les terrains de golf, encourageant sa famille qui faisait sa fierté jusqu’à son dernier souffle. Il a quitté ce monde le sourire aux lèvres et le cœur apaisé. Sa famille, ses amis et tous ceux qui ont eu le plaisir de le connaître au cours de ses 91 années le regretteront à jamais.

La famille tient à remercier tout particulièrement les médecins, les infirmières et le personnel de l’unité de soins palliatifs du 4e étage de l’hôpital Horizon Santé Nord pour leurs excellents soins prodigués à Gerald durant ses derniers moments.

La famille recevra parents et amis à la Paroisse Sainte-Anne-des-Pins, 14 rue Beech, Sudbury, le samedi 28 février, 2026 à 10h00. Une messe funéraire suivra à 11h00.
