Gerhard Krumpschmid Obituary

Krumpschmid, Gerhad (1944 – 2023)

In loving memory of Gerhard Georg ‘Gary’ Krumpschmid who passed away unexpectedly on Saturday May 6th 2023, at the age of 79 years. Loving husband of Eileen (née Maki). Very proud father to Norm (Leslie), Sherry (Reg Canard) and Shannon (Anthony). Exceptional ‘Opa’ to the lights of his life – Brandon Krumpschmid, Aaliyah and Kallie Canard.

Gary was born in Ebendorf, Austria on February 8, 1944 to Franz and Anna (nee Brünner) Krumpschmid and was a big brother to Heinz (Sue) and Ingrid (predeceased). While in Austria Gary trained as a pilot in the Austrian Air Force, then moved to Switzerland briefly working as a mechanic while playing semi-professional soccer. In 1966 he emigrated to Canada with his best friends, Berta and Joe Frank, living in Toronto first and then moving to Sudbury to work for INCO. Sudbury is where he met and married his absolute true love, Eileen, whom he lovingly referred to as ‘Hon’. In 1989, Gary had a very serious mining accident leaving him unable to work. He was proud of his work as a scooptram operator and it was difficult for him to enter forced retirement at the young age of 45.

Gary was a well-known fixture in local arenas first as a hockey dad to Norm, then as the ultimate hockey Opa to Aaliyah and Kallie locally, and was extremely proud to see the Krumpschmid name again on a jersey when he was able to watch Brandon play. He was especially excited to see Norm don the Team Austria jersey when Norm played in the Nagano Olympics. Gary was a dedicated volunteer with the Sudbury Wolves for many years as an official OHL Goal Judge.

Gary was a very gifted woodworker, and his labours of love are displayed proudly in his children’s homes. Despite various health & physical challenges, Gary remained positive and would love to talk about his kids and grandkids to anyone with ears – especially to his dedicated healthcare workers – his PSW Stacey and his nurse, Kim.

A special thank you from the family to Dr. Guy Mongeon for going beyond the call of duty as his primary doctor. Your exceptional care allowed us to have extra years with Gary while he lived on borrowed time.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 76 at 1553 Weller Street (Sudbury) on Saturday May 20, 2023. Family will receive guests from 1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. and all are invited to stay as we celebrate Opa starting at 2:00 p.m. I’m sure he didn’t want to leave his family to mourn, but in the words of Gary, “that’s what it is”. Donations in Gary’s memory can be made to Jumpstart https://jumpstart.canadiantire.ca/pages/donate

Wir lieben dich, Opa.
