Harvey Wyers – May 3rd, 1950 – August 15th, 2025
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Harvey. He was predeceased by his parents, Allie and Helen Wyers (nee MacDonald), and his sister Marilyn. Harvey is survived by his wife of 54 years Suzanne (née Lavigne) and his sons Sean (Dawne) and Chad and his furry friend Chewy.
Harvey was born in Campbellton, New Brunswick and lived in Kedgwick River until his family moved to Sudbury in 1957. Harvey began his foray in politics and the New Democratic Party at the age of 17. Since that time, he has volunteered in every election campaign be it federal or provincial. He held a variety of positions, whether it was putting up election signs, fund raising or as campaign manager, and continued to do so until the most recent provincial election. In 2003 he ran for MPP in the Sudbury Riding. He did not win but that did not change his ideals for social justice. He started working at Inco on December 2, 1969. There he was an avid union activist with the Steelworkers Union Local 6500. He advocated for Health and Safety for his brothers and sisters. He travelled across the country during the 1978-1979 strike raising funds to support his fellow workers. He was also a steward representing grieving workers. He continued working for Inco until he retired in April 2001.
He was one of three family members who played a key role in having the Lord’s Prayer removed from public schools. Following his retirement in 2001, he sat on the Board of the United Way Centraide in Sudbury. He later volunteered as a senior transportation driver for the Canadian Red Cross, where over the years he held a variety of volunteer positions including President of the Sudbury Board of the Canadian Red Cross eventually securing a position on the National Board of the Red Cross. He also sat on the Board of the Sudbury and District Labour Council and most recently on the Board of Meals on Wheels, as well as a yearly driver for Safe Ride Home Sudbury.
He lived his life to the fullest, loved his family dearly including in his four-legged friend Chewy and the grand-dogs Ben and Zarah.
We will miss you dearly.
A huge thank you to the 7th floor staff at HSN. Your kindness, professionalism and empathy did not go unnoticed. Thank you.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, August 30th from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Lockerby Legion, 2200 Long Lake Road Sudbury.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Canadian Red Cross or Meals on Wheels.
