Ian Smith Obituary

Ian Andrew Smith 1964-2024

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden but peaceful passing of Ian Smith on November 26th, 2024, in Sudbury with family close by his side. Left to cherish his memory are parents Eric and Clarice Smith of Sudbury, wife of 23 years Janet and son Joshua whom he absolutely adored as the light of his life, brothers Paul (Pat) of Whitby and Mark (Janelle) of Toronto, sisters Sonia Lopez, Jacqueline (Leslie Thompson) and Maxine all from Mississauga. Brother-in-law John Cormier (Paula) and sister-in-law Jeni Nowak (Peter) and nephew to Melda (Joseph Mason) all from Sudbury. Affectionately known as "Uncle Ian" to Yonnik, Akeem, Yasha, Tamara, Karen, Tanya, Kaysha, Ky, Shakira, Zendaya, Akello, Elijah, Zuri, Kashelle, Christian, Renay, Ryan, Evan, Kai, Colin. He was also close to cousin Jason and family. Predeceased by his mother-in-law Lola Cormier and father-in-law Harvey Cormier.

Anyone who knew Ian was immediately touched by his good nature, sense of humour and mild temperament. To his family he was a natural peacemaker, loyal and brave. To his son Josh he was simply his best friend in the whole world.

From a young age Ian was passionate about electronics, technology and green energy and was always eager to assemble or update computers together with his son. He was an Audiophile who had a special gift for building speakers and audio equipment - it was his favourite hobby and brought years of enjoyment and personal satisfaction. He never missed watching a Formula 1 race and was a big Lewis Hamilton fan. Consulting work kept him busy, but he was always available to help his parents with errands or home maintenance and be on call to fix anything which was usually a TV remote that never worked right according to his father.

Special family memories included regular Jamaican Sunday dinners enjoying his mom's crispy fried plantain, chicken and delicious gravy over rice and peas. Ian was a loving father who took his family on frequent road trips and summer vacations visiting all the places that Josh wanted to see. Another favourite getaway was spending time at Uncle Leslie's because it was a fun and welcoming home base for huge family gatherings in Mississauga plus it gave Ian some quality time to "talk shop" with his lifelong Audio tech friend Igor from Richmond Hill.

Ian was a deeply beloved son, husband, father, uncle, cousin, brother, brother-in-law and friend and his presence will be missed! His forever friend Bruce Dobson has planned a casual get together for close schoolmates and people that knew him throughout the years to celebrate what would have been his 60th birthday on December 8th.

We take comfort in knowing that he is now at peace surrounded by light. He will always be remembered for the kind and generous love he shared with family and friends.

The family would like to thank Health Science North ER, 5th floor south and Cardiac CCU teams and nursing staff for providing compassionate care during Ian's short stay.

A very special heartfelt appreciation to niece Shakira from Oregon Health Science University Hospital who moved heaven and earth and did everything possible to ensure that Ian received the very best care and comfort in his final days.

There are no words to express how grateful and blessed we are to all of our family and friends for their support and prayers and who spent time with Ian prior to his passing to make him feel "loved beyond measure". (Jah Bless, Guide, Love and Protect)

As per Ian's wishes, his ashes will be spread near his grandparents resting place in Manchester, Jamaica. A private celebration of life will be arranged by the family at a later date. There will be no funeral or memorial service.

In lieu of flowers, a Trust has been set up for Joshua Smith and the family respectfully requests that any donations be made via e-transfer to the following email address.
