John William Pellinen, 77, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on June 15, 2026, with his family by his side at the Maison McCulloch Hospice.
Born on April 18, 1949, in Sudbury, Ontario, John grew up in Wanup. He attended (the one-room) Wanup Public School and then graduated from Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School. John met the love of his life, Linda, at 17 years old at Lahti’s Esso, and they were married at 22. Not long after, he became a father to two boys who gave him a run for his money, and what a great father he was. His greatest joy was being a devoted husband, father, and Pappa. His family grew and grew over the years with pets and grandchildren.
He worked at Falconbridge Ltd. for 31 years, retiring as a maintenance planner at the Strathcona plate shop. He was a talented welder, carpenter, and craftsman; he always knew the answer or how to fix any problem and earned another title as ‘Yoda’. He spent his retirement enjoying time at his and Linda’s camp on Tyson Lake with family and friends. John was known for his kind nature, witty sense of humour, and, for those who didn’t know it, he was a poet!
John is predeceased by his mother, Sally Hakala (Tom), and father, Taisto Pellinen. He is survived by his loving wife, Linda, and their two children: Shane (Linda) and Christopher (Amanda). He will be deeply missed by his four grandchildren, Tyson, Cameron, Rachel, and Henry, who affectionately called him ‘Pappa’. John had several special furry grand pets, Bandit, Finn, Hazel, and special foster feline Wallace.
John is also survived by his siblings and their families: Maria Kirkwood (Robert), Peter Hakala (Katrina), Nancy Rose (Mark). Nieces and Nephews: Kim, Vicky, Robby (Andrew), Alex (Kiara), Tiffany (John), Kristina (Alex), Andre, and Nicole. John's memory will live on through his family, whose lives have been enriched by his unwavering love and support.
A special thanks to Dr. Singh and Dr. Jackson from the palliative care unit at HSN and all the amazing staff at the Maison McCulloch Hospice for the extraordinary care they provided to John and his family.
A celebration of John's life will be held on Sunday, July 5, 2026, from 1-4 p.m. at The Estaire Fire Hall – 9775 Estaire Road. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Maison McCulloch Hospice in John’s name.
