Norm Howard Obituary

Norm died peacefully at Health Sciences North surrounded by his family.  He would have celebrated his 90th birthday this December.  He was a loving husband, married for 65 years to his wife and best friend Diana (née Rouleau).  A great dad to son Dan (Sheila), and daughters Nicole and Lianne.  A hands-on grandfather to his four grandchildren Drew, Megan, Hannah, and Logan.  The good son of Thomas and Dorina Howard and brother to Elizabeth, Evelyn (Ken), Ella (Steve), Anita (Gus), Ray (Maureen), Claire (Jorma).  He was also “Uncle Norm” to his many nieces, nephews and neighbourhood kids. Norm worked for Air Canada in the early days when the runway at the Sudbury Airport was just one narrow strip.  He was lucky enough to retire early clocking 36 years with the company.  He loved his job and rarely took a sick day (unless it was for hockey). A dedicated athlete and all-round sportsman, Norm was heavily involved in Sudbury Minor Hockey, and a member of the Silver Stick Committee for over 25 years. Recipient of a well-deserved Sports Hall of Fame award, Norm taught many how to skate and the finer skills of hockey, a game he had a lifelong passion for.  In fact, it was a sport he loved so much he was still skating well into his 80’s.  He also loved the game of golf and would be the first and the last golfer on the green every season. He loved being outdoors doing yard work during sunshine and snow blowing in the wintertime.  Norm was a people person who ‘knew everyone’.  If ever you needed anything, you could depend on him.  He was always willing to help and if he couldn’t help you, chances were he ‘knew a guy.’ He was always quick to lend a hand and always had a good joke or a funny story to tell.  He was a good friend to all who knew him and he enjoyed having coffee with the boys. Norm was most proud of and happiest when surrounded by his family.  He spent a lifetime making wonderful memories with his wife, children, grandchildren and his many friends. Many thanks to the staff of the Palliative Ward at HSN for their care and compassion.  No services are planned.  A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
